Free Essays on Twilight
Twilight Rodney King was beaten and arrested on March 3, 1991. The police pulled him over for a traffic violation and had him chained up and beat him until there really wasnââ¬â¢t much left of him. He had to have several surgeries just to make him look close to himself again. With the beating he had to be in a wheelchair and couldnââ¬â¢t ever feel the same about himself again. A resident of a nearby apartment captured the beating on videotape and gave it to CNN and other stations, and it was seen beyond the world. The four police men that beat him, who were white, went to trial and were acquitted. Many people were astonished by the verdict. This verdict caused some of the worst riots in the United States since the 1960ââ¬â¢s. In Anna Deavere Smithââ¬â¢s, Twilight, she uses short stories to tell about incidents that have happened in Los Angeles. In these stories you hear about beatings, the riots throughout the city, and the buildings being burnt down. On May 3, 1992 there had been fifty-eight deaths, 2,353 injuries, more than 7,000 fire responses, 12,111 arrests, and 3,100 businesses damaged. Smith interviewed a lot of witnesses and people around the Los Angeles area about the Rodney King incident and other riots that broke out around that area. Los Angeles had a lot of problems going on right now and they needed some people to get together and fix them. To do this they would have to speak to the community and be heard, stop all the riots, stop the beatings, and stop the fires from happening. They need to get community members together to fight for their community where they lived. To do this the people would have to be powerful, confident, committed, and theyââ¬â¢ll have to know how to talk to the people. The three people that I think would be the best at getting together and stopping all this would be Elaine Brown, Maxine Waters, and Daryl Gates. Effects of the Riots on the Families Research Paper
Effects of the Riots on the Families - Research Paper Example While many people feel that riots create physical damage to the society, some people confess to suffer psychologically many years after the incident. Sometimes street riots lead to physical injury or death (Ulin 756). Innocently walking pedestrian plunged into a rioting mob. This person has no idea what caused the riot, what the rioters demand or when will the rioting end. The pedestrian has to accept his situation by joining the mob or face lynch from them. On the other end, anti riot police would be chasing the rioting mob in the streets. It is unfortunate that the pedestrian found in the rioting mix would register a bullet wound from police who are resisting their move. The situation suddenly condemns the family of the pedestrian to doom. The breadwinner can no longer support the family because of his inability to perform tasks, which generated income to the family. The situation of that family moves from a bad condition to a worst condition because the pedestrian could not surviv e to help the family out of its difficulties. It is hard to believe sudden twist of events in ones life. A family might not believe the sudden lose of person they loved. Thinking about the last moment shared rekindles sweet memories in life and then bitter regrets about the events that led to death (Hillsbery 56). Family members of the pedestrians have to accept the ugly truth that they have lost the person they loved. Thinking too much about certain condition may lead to mental problems. Some people show attribute of withdrawal from societal activities because they feel that life cannot be that cruel. Several factors may instigate behavior change in a family. Different people respond differently to situations they face. A condition that led to death of a family member might influence other members positively or negatively. For instance, failure to accept death may make a family member to show repulsive characteristics to occurrences in the society. Street families face difficult si tuation during riots. A riot displaces street families from their normal activities (Smith 212). When a street riot occur no one know where to run to, or what items to save or leave. Losing a property that a person has struggled to acquire for many years is an experience that a person may not forget. Many people have confessed that they have failed to face such situations, which occur after a riot. They are unable to believe that their world had crumpled after a short duration. How does a person start building a business firm that he built for ten or fifteen years? The thought of starting from grass is difficult to comprehend and it might remain to haunt an individual for the better part of his life. Sometimes police quelling riots succeed in arresting rioting individuals. The sentences preferred against that individual would in fluence the family of this individual because the family will have to accept that the individual is no longer a good person but a criminal. Families break because partners in those families have failed to yield to a common interest. It is difficult to admit that a trusted partner is among hooligans in the streets. Some people find it hard to accept rejection associated with humiliating effects of riots and end up committing

The Social Side of Decision Making -GP Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Social Side of Decision Making -GP - Essay Example (Larson 1989, p. 46) Here, members of an organization thrive by observing others and rationalizing their actions according to comparisons made with themselves against other people. The upshot is people tend to conform to what is popular at the expense of individualism because that is the safe and easy way to move forward and get things done. This environment is dangerous when we talk of social learning theory because employeesââ¬â¢ negative actions are collectively learned from each other. First off, communication occupies the utmost importance in the whole equation. Nike has reportedly suffered a $100 million loss in a quarter as a result of a miscommunication between the management and the companyââ¬â¢s techies. According to Sharon Morgen (2005), the technicians were waiting for the Nike management for decisions, while the management, for its part, was expecting the techies to make the decision. As a result, an important project was botched and has generated not just loss of money but an incidence of bad blood between the parties concerned. Certainly, talking with and involving all of the people involved in the decision-making process is one of the best ways to avoid the alienation of labor that Karl Marx fretted so much aboutâ⬠¦ If they own the decision, if it is as much theirs as yours [the CEOââ¬â¢s], it becomes impossible to excuse later performance deficits with standard ââ¬Å"it wasnââ¬â¢t my ideaâ⬠excuse. It was their idea. (p. 159) Suggestions on changes are mostly on decision-making fronts. First off, whether it is big-decisions or minor ones, such as deciding on a new corporate logo, it should call for participation and input from everyone. The idea is that there should be a group ownership of a decision so as to remove the stigma of corporate autocratic impulses. Secondly, there should be a delegation of authority not of responsibility. Like in the case when someone blundered on a project and he gets fired for it ââ¬â

Gilmans The Yellow Wallpaper -- Feminism Literature
American playwright and active feminist Clare Boothe Luce once pronounced, ââ¬Å"Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeedâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Clare Boothe Luce Biographyâ⬠n.p.). Societies primarily controlled by the male gender have been the vast majority since the origination of the first civilization. Throughout history, many women lived feeling superior to men only in a domestic setting. This domestic way of life generated considerable false judgments and stereotypes about the female gender as a whole. However, some chose to venture past what society deemed appropriate. These women often sought only for an opportunity where their voices could he heard. As Luce expressed, she and a great number of others found themselves fighting a remarkably hard battle as a result of gender inequality. Luce noticed that when a man articulated his thoughts, others listened. The perpetual request for females to simply be heard is still frequently denied today. A multi tude of women instead turned to writing books and stories in order to communicate the problems they faced. With symbolism, metaphors and other aspects of figurative language, authors, such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman, found themselves making a point without directly speaking their intention. In The Yellow Wallpaper, the narrator represents a womanââ¬â¢s ability to express her beliefs and that disregarding this right only hinders the oppressive, male-dominated society. Charlotte Perkins Gilman, in The Yellow Wallpaper, tells the tale of a woman who documents the hardships she must endure living with a condition known as nervous depression. The story begins as the narrator marvels at the grandiose nature of the home she and her husband will be residing in for the summer. Her... ...re drastic compared to the nineteenth century, but we are still nowhere near having a perfect equality. I honestly feel that we will make one more step toward a solution if more people read Gilmanââ¬â¢s story and understand the message she clearly portrays. Every individualââ¬â¢s voice matters regardless of gender, race, or religion, and with The Yellow Wallpaper, readers can easily see what happens when this crucial fact is ignored. A Decision of Uncertainty Paper Essay
Just recently, this past spring my cell phone contract recently expired after a continuous extension of over lapping contracts for over ten years. I have decided to finally upgrade my cell phone. The saturated cellular device industry can meet various consumer needs just depending on how sophisticated of a device is needed. The new and advanced iPhone 5 is a huge investment for a cellular phone. The retail price for iPhone 5 ranges from an additional $199 with a two year contract and $500 compared to the contract price AT&T offers. If a consumer signs a two-year contract plan to purchase the phone at a reduced price and incentive. See more: Ethnic groups and racism essay Due to financial restrictions and the holidays, I decided to purchase the phone and my contract price for the phone during the 2012 Christmas holidays. ââ¬Å"Through my research and compliance with my constraints, the most opportune time toâ⬠(UOP, 2010, Week Three Supplement) upgrade my phone is reasonable during the holidays. Most cell phone companies such as AT&T and Sprint offer huge savings when multiple agreements are made. An iPhone investment could be costly because the standard warranty does not cover accidental damage. The accidental damage insurance, for an additional 48% one-time fee off the contract price, provides consumers with a peace of mind by providing two year coverage for hardware repair, drops, fumbles, slips, and water damage. Purchasing a high costly device means comes with the decisions on whether to purchase the contract price iPhone and not worry about accidental insurance; thus risk purchasing a replacement phone at retail cost or purchase the contract price iPhone and pay an extra 48% insurance fee, which adds to my spending and reallocate my budget for this phone. To decrease my decision of uncertainty; I have complied research on the new iPhone 5. My researched data set was from Business Wire and it provided a survey of 10,000 iPhones including their warranty claims. More important, my researched specified the hardware and accidental warranty claims. The claims all occurred within two years of purchase. Considering a voice plan and data plan would cost at least $1440 over the term of the contract. Another viable option is setting up an agreement with Cricket, which is better known as a pay as you go company. Cricket does offer an unlimited plan that could cost a consumer more than $5,500 over a two year agreement. Based on research from T3 the Gadget Website, the iPhone 5 is 20% daintier than the iPhone 4s, 16% less bulky than the Samsung Galaxy S3 and 14% lighter that the HTC One X. The iPhone 5 reviews have shown that it has a bigger screen, 4G capability and a better front facing cameras. However, the review also shows that the battery life is still not great, there are no iP5-specifice iOS 6 features and the old maps design is highly preferred. Now, itââ¬â¢s time to review the ten best features of the new Apple iPhone. * iPhone 5 will have a 4-inch screen * The new iPhone will be available in only black and white * iPhone 5 comes with Apples new ââ¬Å"A6â⬠processor, which runs twice as fast as the previous generation. * The phone has more than 200 new features in iOS 6 * You can update your Facebook status using SIRI * 8 MP camera, 3264Ãâ"2448 resolution, five lens element lens, f2.4 aperture, 25% smaller * 8hrs LTE browsing, 10hrs Wi-Fi browsing, 40 hours music, 10hrs video, 225hrs standby * 802.11n 2.4Gz & 5GHz up tp 150Mbps, 802.11 a/b/g/n * The phone will have Now: DC-HSPDA, HDPA+ and LTE * Apples Retina Display 326 pixels per inch (ppi) The iPhone 5 is now available and many consumers will enjoy the new device but it has also started the clock on the next new iPhone. In a year from now, Apple will release a new and improved model of the iPhone. It may possibly be the iPhone 5s or the newly enhanced iPhone 6. My uncertainty still remains to upgrade gracefully to the iPhone 5 or sit tight and wait for the new and improved iPhone. References Future Publishing Limited. (n.d.). Communism and Capitalism Strange Bedfellows Essay
What is it about communism that makes many people scurry and cringe? In America, the mere word might as well be banned from the dictionary. The only time it is used is when talking about new aggressive movements by totalitarian communist countries. Americanââ¬â¢s tolerance level for communism is zero to none. Is communism so horrific that the thought of some forms being successful is out of the question? In society today, capitalism is the leading economic system. When compared to other systems, few meet its standards of living. Capitalists take this fact and hold it at the heart. They become close-minded to all other forms of governmentââ¬âespecially communism. Today, communism is most often associated with totalitarian governments. However,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Many capitalists are convinced that capitalism is the only efficient system. But contrary to their belief, there are alternate utopian enterprises that run efficiently in smaller scale nations. Proponents of capitalism claim that it is the most effective economic system and should be spread across the globe and set up in nations stricken by communism and other totalitarian governments. Some reason that capitalism has the potential to reduce world poverty. Abbas J. Ali, Professor of Management and Director, School of International Management, Eberly College of Business, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, believes that capitalist business executives, ââ¬Å"driven by pragmatism and humility and free of nationalistic or parochial prejudice, continuously search to upgrade market mechanisms to incorporate the ever-changing needs of a worldââ¬â¢s population, be they rich or poorâ⬠(208). In other words, executives are out to serve customers and are always looking for new ways to efficiently do this. In turn, they contribute to the task of solving world poverty. Jon Mueller, professor of political science at Ohio State University, states that humans are flawed and if a government wishes to be successful, it must learn to cooperate with manââ¬â¢s imperfections (45); he believes capitalism does this well. Mueller points out that capitalism does not ââ¬Å"professâ⬠to make all
